3 'Notes to Self' about Your Precious Time

I’ve learned that you can’t have everything and do everything at the same time. Oprah Winfrey

Let’s face it, there’s more to life than work, no matter how rewarding our jobs or careers are. However, finding that sweet spot between our work and life is not for the faint hearted!

Living in line with our values in a world that pulls on us from all directions is not only exhausting but often completely overwhelming. It takes hard work and dedication to find balance in our lives and we all need to a plan to achieve it.

Here's 3 'Notes to Self' to help you navigate the waters of life, find your focus and live a life that makes the most of the precious time available.

Note #1. Find the Gems

Life is full of long to-do lists and 'white noise'. Sifting through it to find the gems is not an easy thing to do! It requires intentional planning on your part.

Those able to successfully implement time management strategies are able to control their workload rather than spend each day in a frenzy of activity reacting to crisis after crisis leading to stress and burnout. These people have the ability to create time to do the things that they love, the little 'gems' in their day that bring them joy.

Each day, spend time creating a schedule and highlight the gems, the things that you want to make time for. Make a habit of what works best for you. Some people like to do it every morning, some the night before. Whichever time you choose, make a habit of intentionally setting aside time to enjoy your 'gems' each day.

Note #2. It's OK to say "No"

Managing your time means boundaries need to be established and to do this you will need to learn to say “No".

“No” is actually a message that can be delivered with grace and compassion. This may seem unkind, but it is just not possible to meet everyone’s needs.

Establishing your boundaries both at work and at home will determine your happiness and success at both. Just like other boundaries, expect people to challenge them. However, continuing to communicate them firmly and with kindness will create an understanding at work with your colleagues and at home with those you love most.

Note #3. Be Your Own Best Friend

Be kind to yourself. Think positive thoughts about yourself. Spend time doing things that are beneficial to your overall wellbeing. Not only is eating, exercise and rest important, but taking effective breaks throughout your day will improve your productivity and help with your overall enjoyment of life.

Often, people think that 'me time' is a day at the spa or something else extravagant that they cannot afford to do. Actually, 'me time' is much simpler. It is anything that you do just for yourself. There is no set expense or time frame that you have to follow when taking 'me time.' It can be as simple as taking a walk. The only imperative concerning 'me time' is that you actually take it.

Over to You
