What to do when you feel overwhelmed

The most common question I get asked is, "How do you do it all?" There has never been an easier question to answer. I don't! Emma Isaacs

Sometimes pursuing success can feel like a lot of stress, burnout, or a constant uphill battle.

Life isn't meant to be lived in a state of stress, overwhelm and anxiety!

If we consider how much of our lives is filled with making stressful decisions and managing urgent tasks, it's understandable how we start to sink under the pressure.

That's why developing a plan to keep your head above water and manage overwhelm is so important! It will not only lead to better mental health, but can also improve your productivity and overall happiness at work and at home. So we're sharing our simple, 5 step plan for combatting overwhelm.

Remember: Your time is precious. Your achievements matter. You have what it takes to succeed!

However, no matter how well you plan and how organised you are, there will likely come a time when you feel like you just can’t get your head above water. When this happens, follow these five easy steps to get on top of things again.

Step #1

Take a deep breath. Make sure that your mind is calm and clear. Take a moment to practise gratitude and focus on your blessings and the positive aspects of your day and your life. The continuous practise of gratitude helps keep you in a positive mindset even when life is challenging.

Step #2

Make a 'To Do' list of the tasks that require your immediate attention.

Step #3

Think carefully and identify the two most important items on your 'To Do' list. Don't allow yourself to procrastinate on these two key tasks. A common trap we can fall into is focusing so hard on completing all the smaller tasks on our list that we put off the larger, more consequential ones that would ease our feeling of overwhelm.

Step #4

Look at your calendar. Create a plan and transfer your 'To Do' list to your tracking system (Outlook, productivity journal, diary, etc.).

Step #5

Start work on the most important item straight away. The key to reaching high levels of performance and overcoming overwhelm is for you to develop the lifelong habit of tackling your major tasks first thing each morning.

Like other plans, you will probably need to revisit your 'To Do' list during the week and prioritise these again once you have completed a few tasks. This plan, however, will get your head above water and get back on track!

Your potential is limitless. You are unique, valuable, capable, and worthy of the dreams of your heart. Most of all, you have what it takes to transform and transcend whatever challenges you face. Marie Forleo

Over to You

An easy way to remember this strategy to deal with overwhelm is to follow the 5 C’s

  1. Calm yourself

  2. Create a list

  3. Add each item to your Calendar

  4. Identify the main Concerns

  5. Start on the most Critical item
